-
2305.1Data from the Department of Employment Services and the Office of Planning indicates there were 48,500 jobs in Rock Creek West in 2005, primarily in professional offices, international organizations, local-serving businesses, public schools, universities, and government. This represents approximately 6.5 percent of the city’s job base. According to Census “journey to work” data, about 34 percent of the jobs in the Planning Area are filled by District residents, about 42 percent by Maryland residents, and about 18 percent by Virginia residents. This same data indicates that 39 percent of employed Rock Creek West residents commute to Downtown Washington, 13 percent work within the Rock Creek West Area, 22 percent commute elsewhere in the District, and 26 percent commute to the suburbs. 2305.1
2305.2The Rock Creek West Planning Area has the highest median income in the city. The 2000 Census reported the median at $80,802, compared to a citywide median of $45,927. The area’s stability and affluence benefit the city by significantly contributing to the tax base while requiring a lower level of publicly subsidized services. Nonetheless, approximately seven percent of the area’s residents lived below the federal poverty level in 2000. Many were elderly, with special housing and transportation needs. 2305.2
