406.1The District has one of the most balanced transportation systems in the country. It is ranked second only to New York in terms of the percentage of residents who take public transportation, and second only to Boston in the percentage who walk to work. Thirty-seven percent of the District’s households have no automobile. Providing transportation choices that are more efficient and environmentally friendly than driving such as walking, bicycling, and public transit is a key goal of the Comprehensive Plan. 406.1
