    Student Discipline Practices and Procedures in Public Schools

                Councilmember David Grosso announces the scheduling of a public hearing of the Committee on Education on Bill 21-0001, Pre-K Student Discipline Amendment Act of 2015 and student discipline practices and procedures in public schools and public charter schools in the District of Columbia.  The hearing will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 4, 2015 in Hearing Room 123 of the John A. Wilson Building. 

     

                The stated purpose of Bill 21-0001 is to prohibit the suspension or expulsion of a student of pre-kindergarten age from any publicly funded pre-kindergarten program; and to establish annual reporting requirements for each local education agency on suspensions and expulsions data for prekindergarten-12th grade.

     

    Those who wish to testify are asked to telephone the Committee on Education, at (202) 724-8061, or email Ade Adenariwo, Administrative Assistant, at aadenariwo@dccouncil.us, and provide their name, address, telephone number, organizational affiliation and title (if any) by close of business Monday, February 2, 2015.  Persons wishing to testify are encouraged, but not required, to submit 15 copies of written testimony.  If submitted by the close of business on Monday, February 2, 2015 the testimony will be distributed to Councilmembers before the hearing.  Witnesses appearing on his or her own behalf should limit their testimony to three minutes; witnesses representing organizations should limit their testimony to five minutes.  A copy of Bill 21-0001 can be obtained through the Legislative Services Division of the Secretary of the Council’s office or on http://lims.dccouncil.us.

     

    If you are unable to testify at the hearing, written statements are encouraged and will be made a part of the official record.  Written statements should be submitted to the Committee on Education, Council of the District of Columbia, Suite 116 of the John A. Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20004.  The record will close at 5:00 p.m. on February 18, 2015.
