Councilmember Yvette M. Alexander, Chairperson of the Committee on Public Services and Consumer Affairs, announces a public hearing on Bill 19-0584, the “Benefits Corporation Act of 2012” and Bill 19-986, the “Portable Electronics Insurance Amendment Act of 2012.” The hearing will be held on October 25, 2012 in room 120 of the John A. Wilson Building.
This notice has been abbreviated to permit a hearing with less than 15 days notice and to provide notice to the public on this important matter.
The stated purpose of Bill 19-584 is to amend Title 29 of the District of Columbia Official Code (Business Organizations) to provide for the incorporation of benefit corporations, for the rights, duties and obligations of benefit corporations and their shareholders, directors and officers, and to impose powers and duties on the Mayor.
The stated purpose of Bill 19-986 is to amend the Producer Licensing Act of 2002 to regulate the licensing and sale of insurance coverage for portable electronics.
Those who wish to testify should contact Ms. Melanie Williamson, Legislative Counsel, at (202) 741-2112 or via e-mail at mwilliamson@dccouncil.us and provide their name, address, telephone number, organizational affiliation and title (if any) by close of business on Tuesday, October 23, 2012. Persons wishing to testify are encouraged, but not required, to submit 15 copies of written testimony. If submitted by the close of business on Tuesday, October 23, 2012, the testimony will be distributed to Councilmembers before the hearing. Witnesses should limit their testimony to four minutes; less time will be allowed if there are a large number of witnesses.
If you are unable to testify at the hearing, written statements are encouraged and will be made a part of the official record. Copies of written statements should be submitted either to Ms. Williamson, or to Ms. Nyasha Smith, Secretary to the Council, Room 5 of the Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W. Washington, D.C. 20004. The record will close at 5:00 p.m. on November 1, 2012.
