    IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

    May 31, 2016

     

    To recognize, honor, and express our overwhelming gratitude to Assistant Chief Patrick A. Burke for his untiring dedication and service to the residents of the District of Columbia on the occasion of his retirement.

     

                WHEREAS, Assistant Chief Patrick A. Burke has had an exceptional 27-year career with the Metropolitan Police Department serving the residents of the District of Columbia;

     

                WHEREAS, Assistant Chief Patrick A. Burke previously served as the Assistant Chief of the Homeland Security Bureau, overseeing the Special Operations Division, Joint Terrorism Task Force and Intelligence Division;

     

                WHEREAS, Assistant Chief Patrick A. Burke has overseen myriad events, including Papal Visits, a G20 Summit, and the 2009 Inaugural of President Barack Obama, and has served as the incident commander of numerous critical incidents;

     

                WHEREAS, Assistant Chief Patrick A. Burke has been a leader in the field of traffic safety, instituting lifesaving programs, leading efforts against impaired driving and underage drinking, and enhancing the well-being of District of Columbia residents and visitors;

     

                WHEREAS, Assistant Chief Patrick A. Burke served with excellence as a board member of the Office of Police Complaints, the Police Officer’s Standards and Training Board, the DC Police Foundation, the Washington Regional Alcohol Program, DC Special Olympics, and the Fishing School, while working with many other volunteer organizations to improve the welfare of those living in or visiting the District of Columbia;

     

                WHEREAS, Assistance Chief Patrick A. Burke has been a stalwart in community policing, gaining the respect and trust of every community he has worked with and enhancing the relationships between the police and the many diverse communities within the District of Columbia;

     

                WHEREAS, Assistant Chief Patrick A. Burke has resided in the District of Columbia with his wife and 4 children throughout his entire career and has been a beloved community leader active with many community organizations and an active coach in youth athletics; and

     

     

                WHEREAS, Assistant Chief Patrick A. Burke has been appointed by President Barack Obama and unanimously approved by the United States Senate to serve as the United States Marshal for the District of Columbia, so his service to the United States of America and the District of Columbia continues.

     

    RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this resolution may be cited as the “Assistant Chief / U.S. Marshal Patrick A. Burke Recognition Resolution of 2016”.

     

                Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes, honors, and salutes Assistant Chief Patrick A. Burke for this unwavering and stellar service to the residents of and visitors to the District of Columbia and extends sincere best wishes on his appointment as United States Marshal for the District of Columbia.

     

                Sec. 3.  This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in the District of Columbia Register.
