Councilmember Tommy Wells, Chairperson of the Committee on Libraries, Parks, Recreation, and Planning, will convene a public oversight roundtable to discuss the future of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. The roundtable will be held on Thursday, September 27, 2012, beginning at 11:00 am in Room 500 of the John A. Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20004.
The purpose of the roundtable is to discuss the future of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library and how it might be renovated or redesigned to better serve the public. The central library, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, has been the subject of two recent assessments. The Urban Land Institute (ULI) recently issued a report on development strategies for renovating or redeveloping the historically protected building. A follow-up feasibility examination is underway, conducted by The Freelon Group and library consultants June Garcia and Susan Kent, and will conclude prior to this roundtable. More information on the ULI assessment is available at www.dclibrary.org/node/28663 and information on the follow-up work is at www.dclibrary.org/node/31037. Both assessments will be discussed during the roundtable.
The Committee encourages the public to testify. Those who wish to testify should contact Ms. Tawanna Shuford at (202) 727-8204 or tshuford@dccouncil.us before 5 p.m. on Tuesday, September 25, 2012.
If you are unable to testify at the public oversight roundtable, written statements are encouraged and also will be made part of the official record. Copies of written statements should be submitted to Ms. Tawanna Shuford, Committee on Libraries, Parks, Recreation, and Planning, Room 117, 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC, 20004, or electronically at tshuford@dccouncil.us, by 5 pm on Monday, October 1, 2012.
