Section 8-B1424. EVALUATION OF TEACHING AND TEACHING-RELATED ACTIVITIES

    1424.1Teaching is the primary mission of the University and shall be a focal point of the evaluation of every faculty member.

     

    1424.2The evaluation process shall recognize the following prime requisites of the effective teacher:

     

    (a)Intellectual competence, integrity, knowledge of subject matter, independence, and willingness to consider suggestions and cooperate in teaching activities;

     

    (b)A spirit of scholarly inquiry which leads to enhancing and strengthening the content of courses in light of developments in a field;

     

    (c)Improving methods of presenting materials;

     

    (d)A vital interest in teaching and working with students;

     

    (e)Accessibility to students through regular office hours; and

     

    (f)The ability to stimulate students' intellectual interest and enthusiasm.

     

    1424.3Only when the quality of a faculty members’s performance is clearly documented to be "above and beyond" the creditable and competent performance expected of all faculty members shall performance in this area be judged to be of the special quality and merit warranting an evaluation of "Excellent."

     

    1424.4Creditable and competent performance shall specifically include the following:

     

    (a)Continuous development and updating of instructional materials and strategies;

     

    (b)Development and revision of course outlines and syllabi; and

     

    (c)Development and use of appropriate assessment techniques.

     

    1424.5A "Good" rating shall confirm that the routine responsibilities and duties normally expected of a faculty member have been met, including activities such as meeting all classes, maintaining records and office hours, and reporting grades.

     

    1424.6In all instances, the quality of a faculty member's performance shall be the dominant factor in determining the weight to be given to the accompanying documentation.
